Conscious consumers can discover Tōnot, the first sustainable cashmere brand to conform to the ‘Responsible Nomads’ charter, at The Shangri-La Ulaanbaatar Hotel. ‘Responsible Nomads’ is a set of standards covering animal welfare and land use, aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of Mongolia’s agricultural products by aligning them with global sustainability trends.

It promotes sustainable farming practices by ensuring that products are sourced from healthy livestock raised on well-managed pastures, empowering herders to deliver high-quality goods to international markets. In doing so, it showcases Mongolia’s unique way of life while raising awareness of the challenge of preserving these traditions and how individuals can play their part in creating a sustainable future.

D.Burmaa, Executive Director of the Mongolian National Federation of Pasture User Groups, said: “We have seen significant improvements in both herders’ practices and the environment since the introduction of ‘Responsible Nomads’ in 2020. “Herders can now sell their animal products at higher prices, resulting in healthier animals and a more stable market for herders’ cooperatives. Additionally, as herders have begun to protect and manage their pastures more effectively, we are witnessing a reversal in pasture degradation.”

The Shangri-La Ulaanbaatar Hotel offers brands upholding the ‘Responsible Nomads’ standards a platform to showcase their responsibly sourced products. Mark Chan, General Manager of Shangri-La Ulaanbaatar, said: “We will introduce and support brands whose mission aligns with ours. “’Responsible Nomads’ highlights issues related to pastureland preservation, nomadic culture and supply chain transparency. We support this initiative to promote and raise awareness of sustainable cashmere among our global visitors.”

Each item of Tōnot clothing has a QR code on the label which can be scanned for more information on the sourcing and traceability of the product, enabling consumers to make a conscious and informed choice. You will find Tōnot in the hotel lobby.
